At Miami County Medical Center we believe each patient has the right to:
- Considerate and respectful care in a safe environment by competent personnel.
- Be informed about his/her rights and his/her health status.
- Reasonable access to care.
- Be involved in the development and implementation of his/her plan of care and treatment, including pain management.
- Have his/her spiritual, religious and cultural needs recognized and respected.
- Recognition and consideration of his/her personal dignity by hospital staff.
- Formulate an advance directive, either verbally or in writing, and to have staff and practitioners comply with the directive
- Appoint a surrogate to make healthcare decisions on his/her behalf to the extent permitted by law.
- Accept medical care, refuse treatment to the extent permitted by law and be informed of the medical consequences of refusing treatment.
- Request a change in physician or transfer to another health facility due to religious or other reasons.
- Security, personal privacy and the confidentiality of his/her information relating to the patient’s medical care.
- Access protective services.
- Be free from neglect, exploitation, abuse and harassment while receiving care, treatment or services.
- Upon request, be given the name of his/her attending physician, the names of all practitioners directly participating in the patient’s care and the names and functions of other healthcare persons having direct contact with the patient.
- Access information in his/her medical record within a reasonable time frame.
- Have a family member or representative of choice and his/her own physician notified in a timely manner of the patient’s admission.
- Assistance in obtaining a consultation with another physician or practitioner at the patient’s request and own expense.
- Be free from restraints that are not medically necessary.
- Allow a family member, friend, or other individual to be present with the patient for emotional support during the course of the stay, unless the individual’s presence infringes on others’ rights, safety or is medically or therapeutically contradicted. This also includes the right to withdraw or deny visitors at any time.
- Receive services free from discrimination based upon his/her age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, language, physical or mental disability, socioeconomic status, source of payment, gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation.
- Be informed of any human experimentation or other research/educational projects affecting his/her care or treatment.
- Examine and receive a detailed explanation of his/her bill.
- Know what the expectations are for his/her conduct as a patient.
- Participate in the resolution of any ethical questions arising in the course of his/her care.
- Obtain the process for communicating concerns regarding service, care or treatment.
We believe each patient is responsible for:
- Providing accurate and complete information concerning his/her present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and other matters relating to his/her health.
- Reporting perceived risks in his/her care and unexpected changes in his/her condition to the patient’s responsible practitioner.
- Asking questions when he/she does not understand what he/she has been told about the patient’s care or what he/she is expected to do.
- Keeping appointments and notifying Olathe Health System or physician when unable to do so.
- Following the treatment plan recommended by the healthcare team.
- His/her outcomes in the event he/she refuses treatment or does not follow physician orders.
- Following the rules and regulations affecting patient care and conduct.
- Respecting the rights of other patients and staff.
- Assuring that the financial obligations of his/her healthcare are fulfilled.
- Being respectful of his/her personal property and that of other persons.
