EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Aquatic exercise is an excellent non-impact workout that build cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and endurance. It’s a great option for people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, joint pain or injury and people with special needs.

Nearly one out of every seven Americans, almost 40 million people, has some type of arthritis. For many of these people pain and stiffness are an everyday occurrence. They may also face social isolation, depression and loss of self-esteem. The aquatic exercise program at Miami County Medical Center (MCMC) is a recreational, non-clinical program that can help many people find relief and get them started on the road to recovery.

The warmth and buoyancy of water can help decrease pain and stiffness and help improve or maintain joint flexibility. Inactivity can result in a decrease in muscle strength, whereas the potential resistive property of water can counteract this problem.

MCMC’s aquatic exercise program includes range-of-motion and muscle strengthening exercises and an optional endurance segment.

All of MCMC’s aquatic exercise instructors are certified in the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program, CPR and Basic Water Rescue.

GOALS OF AQUATIC EXERCISE:

  • Decrease participants’ feelings of depression and isolation
