Primary Care
Our Primary Care Services
Primary care at Olathe Health is special. It’s at the center of your health care—where you can ask questions about routine health issues or seek care when the latest virus knocks you off your feet. A place that helps you organize your preventive care to-dos and all of your health records. And should a serious health condition or injury occur, it’s a place that will connect your entire care team, surrounding you with the highest levels of communication and care.
A primary care provider (PCP) is usually a doctor but can also be a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner who helps take care of the basics of patient care, focusing on wellness and prevention, and make referrals to medical specialists when necessary. Your PCP is often involved in your care for a long time, so it is important to select someone you trust and can work with when planning your care.
Questions to Ask When Choosing a Primary Care Provider
- Are the office hours convenient to your schedule?
- How easy is it for you to reach your provider?
- Does your provider use electronic communication?
- Do you prefer a provider that focuses on disease management and wellness?
- Does the provider invite you to be involved in your care?
- What do your friends and family say about the provider?
Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning a PCP Office Visit
- What is my main health issue?
- When did my symptoms first start?
- Have I seen another provider for this problem?
- Who did I last see and when?
- Are test results, imaging and/or medical records available to share with my PCP?
Types of Primary Care Providers
-
Internal medicine physicians focus on the primary care of adults—from teenagers to the elderly—and diseases of internal organs. Internal medicine includes prevention, management and treatment of common and complex medical conditions that occur in adults, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, conditions related to aging and healthy lifestyle management. Internal medicine physicians will refer patients to other medical specialists for additional care. They actively monitor a patient’s overall condition and health, even when other medical specialists are involved.

Family medicine specialists provide primary medical care for patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on the family. Family physicians see patients of any gender and age, from infants to the elderly. Many people choose a family physician so that the whole family sees the same doctor. The family medicine physicians can coordinate overall care for all family members, and refer to specialty care and services with the family’s best interests in mind. Some family physicians deliver babies and have additional qualifications in prenatal care, pregnancy and delivery.
