New Treatment Option for Patients Needing Aortic Valve Replacement
For cardiology patients who have severe aortic stenosis, Olathe Health now offers a new way to replace the diseased aortic valve in the heart. Instead of open-heart surgery, the interventional cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon work together to perform a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).
Aortic stenosis is when the aortic valve in the heart has narrowed making it harder for the body to pump blood. With less blood flow, the heart has to work harder. This may make you feel short of breath, have chest pain, or feel faint or very tired. Without proper treatment, your heart function can deteriorate.
The TAVR procedure replaces the diseased heart valve. Patients start feeling better right away because the heart valve is now working correctly. Patients say they feel less chest pain and are less anxious. They can get back to their everyday activities.
At Olathe Health, our patients with heart disease have a multi-disciplinary team working together on their individual care plan. This includes the primary care provider, interventional cardiologist, surgeon, and structural heart coordinator – all within the same health system. This team will determine which treatment is right for you.
Our structural heart coordinator, Cara Lanzrath, works one-on-one with patients to coordinate their care. She connects patients with the right specialists, schedules appointments, and is with each of them through every step of the journey.
